Career Advice from Sanjay Manandhar: Boston-Based Tech Entrepreneur
Sanjay Manandhar is a serial entrepreneur, MIT graduate, and visionary tech leader based in Boston. But long before the titles, he was just a young student from Nepal with a dream — a dream that many thought was impossible.
Today, he’s not only proof that it’s possible, but he’s also become a storyteller and mentor, eager to share what he’s learned along the way. In a recent conversation, Sanjay shared timeless advice for anyone chasing bold goals — whether you're a student, founder, or simply figuring things out.
1. “Go for your dreams. Don’t compromise.”
This is Sanjay’s core message. Whether it’s launching a startup, studying abroad, or getting a project approved by your boss — if it matters to you, it’s worth chasing.
“It’s not going to be easy all the time. But if you go for your dreams and keep making incremental advances toward them, it’s possible.”
This isn’t just theory. Sanjay’s own life — from Kathmandu to MIT to global tech ventures — is a story of small steps fueled by a strong compass.
2. Find your compass before you chase speed
In one of the most powerful metaphors from his talk, Sanjay explained the difference between direction and pace.
“If you have two dashboards — a compass and a speedometer — the compass has to come first. You need to know what direction you’re going in.”
Why? Because if you’re flying a jet and you’re off by just 1 degree, you could end up in the wrong country after two hours.
Only after you're pointed in the right direction, he says, should you start accelerating. Know your "why" — then hustle.
3. Even a small chance is still a chance
In 1982, Sanjay had a wild dream to study in the U.S. Most people around him thought it wouldn’t happen.
“The probability was very, very low — but it wasn’t zero. It was a non-zero low probability. That small chance is what got me here.”
That’s the power of belief and perseverance. Even a small opening can lead to life-changing opportunities, if you're willing to keep pushing.
4. Real stories, Real impact
Sanjay is currently working on a book filled with stories — not just his own, but from others around the world who beat the odds. One of them is a Czech doctor who performed the first facial transplant at Brigham and Women’s Hospital in Boston.
He too came from humble beginnings, but with clarity of purpose and consistent effort, achieved something world-changing.
